As we do yoga we naturally become more conscious and inevitably move towards increased refinement in our lifestyle. Many people ask us how we maintain our energy. Part of the answer lies in our live (or raw) food diet. Living live is simpler than you think!
What is a live food diet? Our concept of a live food diet consists of uncooked, organic, plant-based foods. It might include fruits (fresh and dried) leafy greens, avocados, nuts, seeds, beans, grains, sprouts and my favorite: young coconuts! I try to have a coconut shake every day!
Why eat live? Cooking food, or heating above 116 degrees causes food to lose its essential enzymes. These enzymes are the life force or, prana, in food. They help us to increase our own life force by ensuring complete digestion of our foods so the body can recieve the nutrients it thrives on. When we eat cooked food the body is forced to manufacture its own enzymes from a limited supply. This can drain us of energy. Many people accept chronic digestive problems as a fact of life. Our goal is to increase our energy with our food, not have food deplete it! It is much easier to revitalize our living cells with live food.
What are the benefits of a live food diet? Speaking for myself, after five year of eating about 95% live food, I can definitely say I have an incredible amount of energy now! I have also noticed big changes in skin and hair texture. My eyes are clearer(my thinking too!). You should also notice regulated weight (usually loss) and less frequent colds and other ailments.
How can you transition to a live food diet? My advice would be - slowly! If you are transitioning from a non-vegetarian diet it might be too much too fast. Try switching to an organic diet first. Your body will automatically start receiving more nutrients. Add some live food to each of your meals. Start with a salad. You can add sprouts, avocado, raw sesame seeds, etc. Use a live dressing such as quality olive oil with lemon. You can really get creative here.
